The universe of Monpa

Monpa is a medieval fantasy world developed alongside a card game. Here are the main traits of this world.

Defining characteristics

  • Ten races coexist peacefully.
  • Everybody can learn magic spells, but the learning time of one spell is so long that most people know less than two spells. Full-time wizards might know less than ten. It’s like learning another language.
  • The world is sparsely populated, with great expenses of untouched nature.
  • Six magical elements form the world.

The ten races

  • Human (French: humain): pretty standard.
  • Cat (French: chat): humans with cat ears and a cat tail. Animals that correspond to real cats are called “malkins”.
  • Kitsune (French: kitsune): humans with fox ears and up to nine fox tails.
  • Lamia (French: lamia): upper body of a human, lower body of a snake.
  • Mermaid (French: sirène): upper body of a human, lower body of a fish.
  • Harpy (French: harpie): humans with bird legs and wings on their back. Wings are separate from the arms, unlike traditional harpies.
  • Succubus (French: succube): humans with demon/goat horns and a demon tail.
  • Angel (French: ange): humans with wings on their back, but human legs, unlike harpies.
  • Slime (French: slime): made from viscous colored liquid, they can shape their bodies freely. Their only organ is a core, a heart-shaped rock (♥).
  • God (French: dieu): entities coming from outside the physical world, they can take any shape they want. Not all want to be worshipped.

The magical elements

  • starry (French: astral): stars, the sky, music, time.
  • fire (French: feu): heat, passion, mystery, metamorphosis.
  • wind (French: air): speed, exploration, freedom
  • nature (French: nature): neutrality, negation, life, reality.
  • water (French: eau): destruction, sea, death, ephemerality.
  • abyssal (French: abyssal): darkness, color, sharing, empathy.

Sneak peek of some locations

  • Nordend: a kingdom from fertile grounds to snow-covered peaks.
  • Passage: frontier town between Nordend and the territories of the snow tribes.
  • Eios: merchant community from the sea to the desert.
  • Touké: sea county from the cliffs to the abysses.
  • The Observatory: angelic library floating in the clouds.
  • The Heath: free wilderness, almost uninhabited.
