Magic and elements¶

The origin of the elements¶
The exact origin of the world's creation is unknown.
Many myths exist around this topic, but the mose well-known one tells:
Quote
It all starts from a void, from which three primordial and absolute sources emerged.
The first one was the source of light, that took refuge in the skies.
The second one was the source of darkness, that took refuge in the abyss.
The third one was the source of love, that forced the others to unite.
From this union, the universe and life was born.
According to this myth, the three sources of the creation divided in six elements:
- Starry: Linked to the source of light, starry magic is tied to the skies and music.
- Fire: Coming from starry magic, fire magic is attached to heat and mystery.
- Wind: Coming from starry magic, wind magic expresses exploration and liberty.
- Abyssal: Linked to the source of darkness, abyssal magic is told through colors and sharing.
- Water: Coming from abyssal magic, water magic represents death and ephemerality.
- Nature: In equilibrium between all magic like the source of love, nature magic is the incarnation of neutrality and life.
The truth of this myth may be heavily contested by some, however the existence of the six elements is real.
Each race is heavily linked to one of these elements, representing their way of living and their attraction to specific magic types.
Magic¶
Magic is an art form derived from the existence of these six elements. Everyone is able to learn to use magic, especially if it resonates with their associated element.
To cast a spell, one needs to follow rigorous training first: a spell requires a calm mind and absolute precision in order to work. For a beginner, learning and mastering one single spell can take multiple years of practice. This specific practice can then be applied to learning other similar spells, making the learning process faster for subsequent spells.
Moreover, the caster needs enough physical and mental strength: even for a humain resonating with nature magic, a basic healing spell asks a considerable source of energy to be cast, and even more if this spell is powerful or needs to be maintained for multiple seconds. Without enough concentration (voluntarily ceasing the spell or loss of control from the caster) ou when getting short on physical/mental strength (loss of consciousness), the casted spell disappears.
Because of these harsh limitations, most of the population knowing magic spells limit themselves to learn only one or two spells within the most useful for their everyday life. Richer people, or people with more available time for magic learning, can learn three or four spells. Expert mages can learn up to ten spells, or for the most powerful, even create new ones.
Some spells can be placed in a sub-category: enchantments, that is, spells with a very long duration. These are the most difficult spells to cast, as they need to be maintained for their entire lifespan, demanding great concentration and energy resources.
Casting a spell can be done through the caster's own body or though specific tools designed to help with concentration: some bards use musical instruments in this way to channel their spells and help them focus. Others can also use stones or tattoos.
It is easier to master magic the more time you can dedicate to it, and as such angels and succubi are better mages due to their greater longevity. Kitsunes also have a greater natural aptitude to magic, facilitating their learning and training.
Learning magic¶
There are multiple ways to learn to cast spells:
- Learn with a local mage: They can teach the spells that they know, nothing more.
- Learn with magic books: Self-teaching magic is the most complex and dangerous way to learn, but specialized spells are stronger, most of the time.
- Learn in magic schools: The eccentric environment and the presence of multiple specialized teachers gives a bigger entryway to the ways of magic and also facilitates social links between future mages.
Within the commanders¶
Within the OCG commanders, some of them master a few spells:
- Based on historical writings, the Conqueror of the hungry blaze was capable of cristallizing magic. A magic crystal can be used as a sort of consumable energy tank to amplify another mage's spells. This extremely powerful, rare and dangerous art has unfortunately been lost to time.
- Meulin knows a dozen of enchantments of various types.
- Nora masters a spell capable of undoing other spells, and can also decline it into various forms. She is also capable of limiting the effects and casting capabilities of spells around her.
- Sène knows two spells: a short-range teleportation spell (fast and cheap to cast), and a lightweight object attraction spell.
For Noelle, Adfel, Kensa, Fierbe and Shu, we do not know if they learned a spell or not, as their known capabilities and talents are non-magical.
